WILL IT HURT?

and other general tattoo questions
does getting a tattoo hurt
WHAT IS THE PAIN LEVEL FOR A TATTOO?
An average tattoo is around a 3-4/10. The closest similarity to getting a tattoo is getting a scratch on a sunburn. It's not the best feeling in the world, but it's only a few hours of slight pain for your dream tattoo to be on your forever. Remember, you only have to do it once! Each part of the body will have a different pain level when getting tattooed, to learn more about what hurts more visit our blog about tattoo pain levels here.
ARE TATTOOS SAFE?
Getting a tattoo is entirely safe as long as you go to a professional artist who follows all suggested safety precautions. Make sure you're completely honest about any medical issues you may have. To learn more about tattoo safety read our full article.
HOW LONG DOES A TATTOO TAKE?
The time it takes to complete a tattoo ranges drastically from piece to piece. Multiple factors go into how long a tattoo will take such as size, color, detail, and complexity. Tattooing is not a quick process, nor should it be rushed as you will be living with the results permanently. An averagely complex piece of work about the size of your hand usually takes about three hours to complete. Some of the larger or more difficult items can take tens of hours to complete and will require multiple sittings. Appointments are usually scheduled in increments of an hour, but certain smaller items may just require a thirty-minute appointment. Depending on the complexity, a whole sleeve (done by any skilled artist) could take anywhere from ten to fifty hours to finish.
IS IT OK TO GET A TATTOO IF I'M SICK?
We recommend that you eat well before you come in, and remember to stay hydrated. If you start to feel woozy, have a soda. Sugar is your friend in this situation. It’s best not to party the night before because alcohol can increase bleeding for up to 24 hours. Blood also dilutes our pigments, affecting both the appearance of your tattoo as well as the healing process. Remember to stay calm and cool, you’re in good hands.
CAN I USE NUMBING CREAM OR PAIN KILLERS?
While many tattoo artists advise against using numbing cream, it is an option that people can consider based on their health and personal preferences. Even though they're topical, numbing creams function and can be highly powerful. Not all anesthetics are created equal, so do your homework to choose the best one for you. Although numbing cream is an option, few tattoo shops advocate it for a variety of reasons. To begin, it must be applied several hours before to your tattoo appointment and can only last thirty to forty-five minutes. Because tattooing is an art form and not an exact science, you may have to wait longer than your scheduled appointment time while the tattooist completes a piece of work that took longer than intended. This makes timing the application of the cream extremely difficult. Second, even if you time your application right, the cream's relatively short working period renders it unsuitable for all but the simplest and smallest tattoos. To learn more about tattoo numbing cream and pain killers for tattoos read our full article on the subject.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY TATTOO SESSION?
Make sure you're well rested, hydrated, and that you've just eaten. Apart from that, take a shower, fully charge your phone or tablet, and avoid bringing in your 50 best friends (1-2 are fine, if you ask first).

PLANNING AND PREPARATION

PLANNING AND PREPARATION
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR MY TATTOO SESSION?
Being comfortable is more essential than being stylish. Looser is better than tighter, and keep in mind that depending on where you have your tattoo, you'll want to be able to cover up any areas that might show.
SHOULD I HAVE A DRINK BEFORE MY TATTOO TO STEADY MY NERVES?
No. Other than the obvious challenges of tattooing a drunk person, and the fact that any reputable tattooist will refuse to tattoo you if you have, this is not recommended. The major reason for this is because alcohol causes your blood to thin significantly. As a result, you will have heavy bleeding throughout your tattoo, which will not only make it difficult for the tattoo artist, but will also have the effect of 'washing out' ink as it is applied. This prolongs the process and may result in unsatisfactory results.

Because alcohol has a long-lasting effect, getting a tattoo after a night of drinking is not a good idea, even if you haven't had anything to drink that day.
DO I NEED TO PREPARE DIFFERENTLY FOR A LARGER TATTOO?
First and foremost, come chat to us. The best huge compositions ALWAYS begin with a well-thought-out plan, rather than a collection of disparate elements thrown together haphazardly. We can make a sleeve or back piece over existing work, but it always looks better when you come in with a plan and enable the same artist to assist you realize that plan. In a same vein, to even get close to finishing a sleeve, you'll need numerous sessions and a budget of $1,000 or more. So, given these are investments and commitments, prepare ahead and save your money so that you can tackle these huge components.
WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT ASK ABOUT TATTOOS?
1. Don’t tell the artist “you have complete freedom” and then come to the shop and make a lot of corrections.
2. Don’t send them a picture of another artist’s work and say “I want this tattoo”.
3. Don’t be surprised if the artist does not want to tattoo in a style that is not his/her own.
4. Don’t bring extra people with you to be tattooed without asking the shop first. Most shops don’t want your friends sleeping in the waiting area while you get tattooed.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS I MAY NOT THINK OF BEFORE I COME IN?
1. Take a shower, please.
2. Please do not bring your children. 3. Please don't bring them with you.
3, Bring all of the appropriate paperwork with you.
4. Getting a tattoo requires money, so bring it!
5. Eat something before you come in!
6. Plan for a crash (and be ready!) if you're diabetic.
7. It's possible that your concept won't be able to be tattooed.
8. It doesn't mean it's a good tattoo just because you saw it on Pinterest.

TATTOO AFTERCARE AND WHAT TO DO?

TATTOO AFTERCARE
HOW SAFE IS TATTOO INK?
It depends on where it originates. There are several widely available inks on the market nowadays. Tattoo ink of high grade that has been tried and tested for generations with no negative side effects. Ink manufacturing is now controlled to ensure that certain health and safety criteria are met, but only in a few countries (EU and USA). Unfortunately, the sale of tattoo inks on eBay has opened the market to low-cost Chinese inks and knockoffs of well-known and renowned brands. These Chinese inks are potentially hazardous. Some of these inks were recently tested and found to contain both illegal and dangerous compounds, according to a report released lately. With this in mind, it's no longer enough for your tattoo artist to employ reputable brands; they must also obtain their inks directly from the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved outlet to assure product integrity. To learn more about how safe tattoo ink is read our article on tattoo safety.
SHOULD I TIP MY TATTOO ARTIST?

It may be tempting to soak up some rays or visit a tanning clinic during the summer months, but before you do, please read up about tattoos and tanning, which you can do here.

Within the first two weeks, the majority of your new tattoo will have healed. However, the skin is still healing and rejuvenating, so expect your skin to take 4-6 weeks to return to its prior state.
I JUST GOT A NEW TATTOO ON MY LEG - CAN I SHAVE?
Your skin will take some time to heal enough for you to shave again, and this period may vary from person to person.
WHY DO TATTOOS START TO ITCH WHILE HEALING?
The itch begins to appear when the skin regenerates, usually around a week after the tattoo is completed. This is quite normal. Using good moisturizers will help a lot, but DO NOT SCRATCH IT! If lotion isn't working, run it under cold water for a few minutes to relieve the itch.
